Configuring eMule

by ARCH » Sat Feb 24, 2007 12:50 am

1. Setting up a server list & connecting to an eD2k server

2. Configuring your upload and connection limits

3. Using an IP-Filter to minimize corrupt chunks and improve security

Recommended first-usage instructions!

a. Click on the Servers button in the top toolbar; the server list will come to view.

b. Select and delete all the servers (or right click and choose Remove All).

c. Insert “http://www.gruk.org/server.met.gz” or "http://www.peerates.net/servers.php" in the Update server.m
and press Update – do NOT update from any other server lists; these are the only reliable ones from which y

e. Load the eMule Options, select the Server tab, and make sure only the two options in the screenshot below

Note: You need to do these instructions only once, but it’s safe to re-apply them at anytime, so if you haven't
do so now (even if it's not first-usage).

What else do I need to know?

You will always need to connect to only one eD2k server first at a time. Click on the Servers button in the top
server list will come to view. eDonkeyServer No2 usually has the highest number of users (not max users), an
one of the best eD2k servers. A server provides only an index for the files that the connected users are sharin

Which server should I connect to?

eMule’s UDP search will find all the active sources sooner or later, a little slow but effective. UDP is a conne
protocol so it does not even need to connect to the servers. In short it doesn't make a big or small difference t
you get connected. UDP search feature will bring sources from other servers after some time without needing
to all of them. Connecting to one of the more popular eD2k servers (see below for details) makes it just sligh

You should allow your eD2k client a limited upload of 75% to 80% of your max upload so that it does not slo

256kbps / 8 = 32kB/s, then 80% of 32kB/s = 32 * 0.8 ~ 25kB/s.

What is an IPFilter and a corrupt chunk?

What we basically do here is an attempt to protect eMule from receiving corrupt or fake chunks from other su
harmful clients. An IP-Filter is simply a list of IP ranges created (and regularly updated) by various security

trust in the eD2k community. This IPFilter restricts any connection to or from your client to other clients on t
eMule. It is possible to use these IPFilters on a global scale using security apps such as ProtoWall, meaning t
not only via eMule, but via all internet connections on your operating system. Our prime concern however is
eMule protection by integrating that IPFilter into eMule, which is fortunately a very easy task.

How do I configure an IPFilter?

In the eMule options, click the Security tab. There you simply need to copy/paste one of the two IPFilters lin
the Update from this URL: field, then press Reload/Update or just Applyif it's the first time. The filter level s
its default value 127. Make sure that Filter Servers toois enabled. You should consider updating your IPfilte
'Reload/Update') every 2 or 3 weeks.

Note: Enable Protocol Obfuscation as shown in the screenshot – eMule communication becomes hard to dist
random data, thus it bcomes harder to detect the eMule protocol. This helps a lot against ISPs that try to throt
internet connection.

The paranoid 'pip' ipfilter should be the most important for those who are very concerned about security (not
it helps a lot against getting busted and such). If security is not a major concern, the normal ipfilter (nipfilter)
fine; it's actually much more friendly in downloads than the panaroid one.

would be best just linking to the actual IP Filters download page if you don't mind.

At this point I can say that the NIP & PIP filters will only be availble from Blocklist Pro and the direct
